A Beginners Workshop in Ashtanga Yoga
Learn the fundamentals of Ashtanga yoga with this 3 hour introductory weekend workshop. Open to complete beginners as well as students who wish to consolidate their understanding of the foundations of the practice. No previous yoga experience is required. Of course, its impossible to master this sophisticated yoga system in a short space of time, but we can set you up so you are ready to move forward and maximise your learning when you attend led classes or start a Mysore practice.
The workshop gently guides you through key elements of the practice:-
• Learn introductory physical postures from Ashtanga yoga (asana)
• Learn to breathe to enhance the postures’ benefit (pranayama)
• Learn to hold gentle muscle engagement to increase power (bhanda)
• Learn to move between postures with safe, sequenced movements (vinyasa)
There will also be time for questions and to discuss the context of the traditional system of Ashtanga yoga, which was developed by Shri K. Pattabhi Jois. It continues to be taught by his daughter Saraswathi and grandson Sharath, with whom Ben studies regularly in Mysore, India.
Ashtanga is one of the more athletic forms of yoga, so having a reasonable level of fitness before you start is desirable, but the practice can be varied to match your level of fitness.

This workshop can prepare you to gain maximum benefit from regular Ashtanga classes, offered by Ben and the other Ashtanga teachers throughout the week at Yoga Place.
